About the Author

Grammy-nominated music educator Steve Holley served as the Producer for the Commercial Music Program at the Kent Denver School outside Denver, CO, for nineteen years. During his tenure, the R&B, soul, salsa, and jazz bands of the CMP were recognized by DownBeat magazine’s Student Music Awards 15 times – the most of any secondary program in the country. He is a sought after bassist and clinician with performances, master classes, and presentations given at dozens of state, national, and international conferences. Steve holds a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music, specializing in jazz and classical bass, from the University of Memphis. He authored the book Coaching a Popular Music Ensemble: Blending formal, non-formal, and informal approaches in the rehearsal. Currently, Steve serves as Vice President of the Association for Popular Music Education and is pursuing his Ph.D. in Music Learning and Teaching at Arizona State University where his research focuses on ways of learning and teaching popular music from the viewpoint of the performing musician.

Dr. Kat Reinhert is an accomplished songwriter, vocalist, musician, author and educator. She has taught courses in jazz, songwriting, private voice, theory, and popular music ensembles and is a sought after clinician for master classes and workshops. As a performer and songwriter, Kat has released five independent albums as well as sung on multiple projects and recordings with noted artists. Kat holds a Bachelor of Music in Jazz/Commercial Voice from The Manhattan School of Music, a Master of Music in Jazz Performance/Pedagogy and a Ph.D. in Music Education, specializing in higher education popular music performance and pedagogy, from the University of Miami. Kat is the Immediate Past President of the Association for Popular Music Education and the former Director of Contemporary Voice connected to the M.A.D.E. and Bruce Hornsby Creative American Music Programs at The University of Miami, Frost School of Music. She currently resides in New York City where she is working on several music, educational, business, consulting and writing projects.

Dr. Zack Moir is an Associate Professor of Music and the Director of the Applied Music Research Centre at Edinburgh Napier University, Scotland. Zack’s research interests are in popular music in higher education, popular music composition pedagogy, music education and social justice, and the teaching and learning of improvisation. He has published on the topics of popular music pedagogy, music in higher education, popular music making and leisure, popular music songwriting/composition, and real-time interactive networked performance. Zack is also an active composer and musician performing as a soloist and in bands internationally. Zack is the lead editor of ‘The Bloomsbury Handbook of Popular Music Education: Perspectives and Practices’(2019), and co-editor of ‘The Routledge Research Companion to Popular Music Education’ (2017).
