Description
F-flat Books is proud to present our first anthology of stories and the launch of our new imprint, Mixolydian Books, an imprint centered on telling nonfiction stories of educators and artists.
If you’ve ever taught music, you already know: no rehearsal, lesson, or performance ever goes exactly as planned. The downbeat is clear, the score is marked, the baton is steady—and yet somehow, the trumpet player is two measures ahead, the clarinets are lost in another universe, and someone in the back row just asked if they could leave thirty minutes early from a one-hour rehearsal.
This anthology is a love letter to those moments. It’s a collection of real, laugh-out-loud stories from music educators who understand that teaching is equal parts artistry, pedagogy, and improv. These are the tales shared in the teacher’s lounge, the stories that surface at conferences, the ones told to our families and friends who shake their heads and say, “That can’t be real.” (Spoiler: it is.)
But beyond the laughter, these stories remind us of something deeper: that music education is important. Despite the chaos, music educators make a difference every single day when they enter the classroom. In the middle of these hilarious moments—missed entrances, mixed-up lyrics, and concert-night surprises—there are heartfelt experiences of joy, connection, and the kind of community that only music can create.
