It’s a party on the playground, and you’re all invited!

After a long day of professional development, a group of Nashville, TN music teachers (Alice, Alicia, Danielle, and Franklin) went outside to make a “Daily Ditty” inspired by Otto Gross. The teachers made their way to the playground and began to explore all of the different sounds. After a few minutes of exploration, the music teachers found a groove they liked and recorded their very first Ditty. While the teachers were recording the ditty, local neighborhood children began to take notice and show interest in the music being created.

The teachers posted their video and tagged Otto who immediately began to sing…. “Party on the Playground”. A few moments later Otto shared a remix of the music teacher’s video. This song would stay in the minds of Otto and the music teachers over the next few weeks and we wrote an entire song based on the initial concept.

Our hope is for students to know that music can be everywhere, even outside of the music classroom. Musical creativity resides inside both teachers and students. As music educators, we must give students the space to create and share their lived musical experiences. When students feel safe, they take ownership of their learning and begin to reimagine music education.

This final product is a collaboration between three music educators: Alicia Engram, Otto Gross, and Franklin Willis, who share the same passion for student engagement, learning, and brilliance. We know that every music teacher has their own creative approach to teaching. This document was created to give music teachers ideas on how to incorporate this song into their curriculum. Use this song to build community, make music, and have fun.
