Description
Navigating Music Interpretation through Appreciation is a comprehensive curriculum guide for secondary general music education focused on the studies of musicology, music philosophy, and music theory of music across cultures worldwide and in pop culture. Students learn to compose, perform, analyze, and appreciate music through different perspectives and inclusive discussions focusing on musical identity. This curriculum allows educators to approach teaching through an engaging, collaborative, and critical lens. Secondary general music education is integral to music education, often overlooked by ensemble performance. Traditional general music education classes focus more on music’s theoretical and historical scope. However, it should also include students’ perspectives and expression of music in history and culture. This book has an extensive curriculum on music theory, history, technology, composition and performance, musical theatre, and social justice. It provides educators with objectives, lesson plans, informal and formal assessment ideas, rubrics, and the curriculum outline to share with school leadership. This curriculum is adaptable and offers a wide range of materials to learn with students. It is tailored to work with limited resources and provides various learning opportunities for students and educators alike.
This is an excellent curriculum and instructional resource for music educators. The author goes in depth describing how to roll out this curriculum, lesson plans, rubrics, and more. It is easy to read and provides teachers in all walks of life the ability to either adapt the work or to use it as is. This book would be an excellent resource for music educator preparation programs so that future music teachers have an exemplar of ways we can teach the entire student while still going through a standards based approach.
