Rounds all Around

Rounds All Around is a collection of 45 original rounds for young voices. The age and ability levels of the rounds are diverse, ranging from Early Elementary to Secondary School. Each round stands alone as a unison piece, but as students are able to realize the multiple parts, deeper learning and listening emerge in beautiful, insightful, and, at times, humorous ways. Basic lesson ideas are included with each round as well as an index that includes Key, Mode, Meter, Range, Voices, and Theme.

Description

This collection features original rounds suitable for singers of all levels, from early elementary through secondary and beyond. David Thaxton, an experienced elementary music teacher, workshop presenter, and AOSA-certified Teacher Educator, developed these pieces in response to challenges he encountered throughout his professional journey. While designing instruction for both children and adults, he often spent countless hours searching for pieces that matched a specific mode, meter, or theme—only to discover that such works were either unavailable, unsuitable for classroom use, or problematic in origin.

Drawing on his background as a poet and musician, David began composing original music to meet his instructional needs. As these compositions made their way into his elementary music classes and later into the Summer Orff Levels curriculum, his adult students responded with enthusiasm, particularly to the rounds. Their encouragement inspired him to write a new round each week. Some pieces were discarded, while others proved unsuitable; however, many were successful and found their way into the classroom, where student feedback helped refine them further. The students’ patience and insights were invaluable to the development of this work.

The result is this book: a collection of 45 tried-and-tested rounds. Each piece functions as a stand-alone unison song, making them accessible to younger students, while the harmonic and rhythmic complexities of canonic performance offer meaningful challenges for older students and more advanced singers. The collection spans a wide range of themes—from science to seasonal, heartfelt to humorous—ensuring broad appeal and adaptability across educational settings.

A thematic index is included to aid in selecting pieces by key, mode, meter, range, voicing, and theme. Creating these pieces has been a joyful process for David Thaxton, made even more fulfilling by knowing these songs will now take on lives of their own in classrooms and choirs around the world.
