Description

An Introductory Music Theory Curriculum provides a way for teachers to make the study of introductory music theory more engaging, collaborative, meaningful, and approachable for high-school level musicians. This book includes an overview of constructivism and constructivist pedagogy as well as full, detailed lesson plans for ten units of study in beginning music theory.

This book is intended to be used as a supplement to your existing introductory music theory curriculum. The units of study and the lessons themselves are flexible enough to fix with any textbook series or existing materials. Each lesson allows students to discover the main topic through a variety of means before the formal introduction of the concept from the traditional curriculum.

The ten units of study are as follows: note reading, simple meters, compound meters, scale patterns and relationships, key signatures, intervals, triads, Roman numeral analysis, cadences, and form. Each unit consists of two lessons. The first lesson introduces the concept and the second expands upon it. Each lesson is aligned with the National Core Arts Standards for Music and includes the materials needed for each lesson with formative and summative assessments.

This is the first publication in the Kent State Curriculum Series.
