Description

Hello, and welcome to Drum O’ Clock, a Digital Community Drum Circle Experience.  When the world experienced the Coronavirus World Pandemic in 2020, I was contacted by my school to figure out how to keep our school community together through music.  I quickly thought a virtual community drum circle would be a great way to fulfill this need.  Knowing that everyone had access to their voice, body, and found sounds, I started creating a model based on the community drum circle model I had learned from Arthur Hull, author of Drum Circle Facilitation: Building Community Through Rhythm.

The first live video was a success and drew interest from around the world.  People were excited by the idea and kept joining the drum circle every day for two weeks.  The culmination of this book is what I taught on Facebook Live prior to my school starting Non-Traditional Instruction.

The purpose of this book is to engage learners with a well-rounded approach to music that engages the learner from multiple perspectives using accessible instruments found around the home, as well as the voice and body percussion.  The pedagogy originated from a collection of philosophies found in Orff-Schulwerk, Social and Emotional Learning, Community Drum Circles, and Mindfulness.

The lessons included in this book are ones that have been very successful throughout the world during the Coronavirus Pandemic of 2020. You can modify these lessons for homeschool populations, Non-Traditional Instruction, General Music Class, and community-building events.

This book is geared towards upper elementary students.

I attended Michelle’s session at the FABSS virtual conference, and I was so inspired. I am a vocal music major, secondary ed, and never had any ORFF training. I want to try her drum circle techniques in my middle school choirs this year. The layout of the books and lessons are very clear. Highly recommend!

I would highly recommend this book! Michelle’s philosophy is so important for music learners of all ages. I just tried one of her lessons with a third grade class today, and WOW! Students were so engaged and excited, and we had a really great discussion about feelings. This is wonderful not only for music making, but also for social emotional learning. Every child needs this!

This resource is really well done and I think the lessons would be compelling for grades 2-5, maybe 6. Unfortunately, as I found this grouped with higher grade resources I bought it for use with my 8-12 grade students. While there are things they could learn from this, it comes across as just elementary enough that I can’t imagine my students buying in to it.

Overall, really well done lessons, perfect for upper elementary and long enough for a full zoom class! If you teach upper elementary, go for it! If your students are older than that, I’d say pass.
