From Across the Street takes Pati, an American Dominican girl who visits her Grandmother in the Dominican Republic during the summertime, on a musical exploration into one of the most widespread Dominican folkloric musical traditions, “Los Palos.” Nurtured by her Mami (Mommy) and Abuelita (Granny), Pati learns about the instruments, rhythmic patterns, singing, and meaning embedded in the musical expression.

My role as a Grandma in my family is to continue to supply interesting and fun music adventures and the From Across the Street Teaching Guide and interactive Flip Book absolutely was the perfect answer to making my long week-end with my almost 5 creative grandson everything I had hoped it would be! Armed with the teaching guide and my little arsenal of percussion instruments we journeyed to the town of Villa Mella to learn all about la Fiesta De Palos and play along with the wonderful music.
I especially appreciated how at first the little girl was afraid of a woman she did not know, but through the music came to understand and find her not so scary.
