Your Song is the story of Kai, a student who sometimes gets frustrated when overstimulated or when schoolwork becomes challenging. This story follows Kai as they learn ways to regulate their emotions. This story is a great way for teachers to introduce Social Emotional Learning skills, specifically self-management, through song and story. The teacher’s manual includes an arrangement of the song in the book and lesson plans to have students perform, create, and relate. The manual also includes lesson plans for art teachers written by the illustrator!

Description

Your Song focuses on the Social Emotional Learning skill of self-management. According to CASEL, self-management is “The abilities to manage one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations and to achieve goals and aspirations” (CASEL.org, 2023). The reason the authors decided to focus on self-management was because of an increase in students becoming frustrated or upset while working on difficult tasks. Through this story and teacher guide, students will reflect on times they have become frustrated, and tools/skills they have used self-manage their emotions.

The arrangement allows for many musical skills, some possible objectives for students could include:

  • Playing a rock beat with classroom instruments, or a drum set if available.
  • Playing recorder between G and E, or descending E D C.
  • Understanding form through performance.
  • Generating musical ideas through composing a verse on self-management strategies.

This product comes with:
